September 24 Stonegate Horse TrialThe course layout of the trial here was nice, if you were at the top of the hill near the barns you could see a good portion of the course. The morning started out not very promising at all. In fact, I was very afraid I'd be getting rained on most of the day, that's how dark and dismally gray it was. But the clouds blew out for a brief while, it got wonderfully bright and sunny and I got some great photos. Only drawback was that it was incredibly windy, so much that it actually blew my camera over when I left it unattended for a couple minutes to return to my chair during a lull in the competition. Thankfully no damage was done, I just had to clean a bit of mud off the eyepiece of the camera and some of the tripod. No serious injuries at this trial that i'm aware of. However, I did see a rider fall, it happened right at the fence I happened to be shooting photos at. Amazingly enough the rider somehow managed to hang onto her reins the whole time, which kept the horse from running off!
Unfortunately this was a split event. Half of it was run yesterday, meaning Saturday. I was not able to make it out to the earlier portion of the event so I have no pictures of Starter or Beginner Novice divisions. The photos I have are of Novice, Training and Preliminary divisions.
Seems time to probably purchase and print out contact cards I would say. I love the requests i'm getting but it's awkward to try and write down website and/or contact information when i'm trying to shoot photos at the same time. Much easier to just hand someone a card and ask to be emailed with the necessary info instead of handwriting everything. Please see previous post for contact info. South Farm againTime flies when there are so many horse trials. I wish to extend a very sincere thank you to the lovely webmistress of the Erie/Lost Hounds website for her kindness in adding a link to this page from their site so other riders could see if there were photos of themselves available.
A note to those who may wish to try and obtain picture files. I'm happy to email them. Just drop me a note to bladedshadow71@yahoo.com with the name of horse and rider and event name and I should be able to do that though I usually resize the images a bit to make them faster to download.
After the Erie Hunt & Saddle Club trial back in August there was another trial the following weekend at South Farm. Pictures from it are already posted onto this site, I just forgot to really post anything regarding the trial itself. Nice event, long delay on start due to fog, but turned out rather nice after it finally burned off. I was fairly pleased with the photos, though they perhpas did not turn out quite as well as those from the July trial.
I'm getting a slowly increasing number of requests for photos to be emailed. I'm truly thrilled to see it, at this time i'm more than happy to email pictures I may have of riders and their horses. I do not do this professionally. I have loved horses since I was a child. My mother actually did hunter/jumper showing back in her teenage years, and horses were a major part of my family when I was quite young. I never got into riding nearly as much as I would have liked, so photos are the next best thing. I personally simply enjoy trying to make photos available, even if they aren't really professional quality. Eventually I'd like to start doing it professionally or semi-professionally perhaps. But for now i'm more than delighted to try and email pictures to riders and their parents. August 20 EHSC Horse Trial...mostlyEvery August the Erie Hunt & Saddle Club holds a horse trial. It's a two day event, just like the Lost Hounds Horse Trial held every June. These two events are held on the same property. The August trial is sometimes longer, as it also now boasts an Intermediate Division where most only go as high as Preliminary. Differences lie in maximum fence heights, complexity of the jumps and the number of total jumping efforts over the entire course. This year there were actually more Intermediate entries than Preliminary, which was a surprise to many I think. Unlike the beautiful sunny weather we were blessed with at the June trial, this event was beset with dark overcast skies, somewhat chilly temperatures and off and on rain on Saturday. Overall lighting conditions were not the greatest for pictures so unfortunately the ones I shot did not come out as good as some of the June photos. Still, I managed to get some pretty cool shots, especially as I was focused around one of the water jump areas for a change.
On a general note I am still experimenting a bit with settings on this camera, which I got a great amount of practice with this weekend! Constantly changing lighting conditions resulted in me using almost completely manual controls and I was constantly adjusting to try and get good lighting without pictures being too dark or too light. Needless to say, sometimes this worked, sometimes not. I do have a photo editing program however and some of the brighter ones I was able to darken a small bit to make the images more presentable to the eye. What i have posted on this site is a little less than half of the total shots I took this weekend. There are others that are good too, but I was trying to select a range of good images to put on the site to save space. I also removed the old pictures i had of a schooling show and the Winona Horse Trial. For the latter, the images did not come out all that well, it was my first time using the camera at an actual horse trial so most of the images were blurred. Also posted this evening are pictures from the July South Farm recognized horse trial held on July 2nd. Many of the images from that show are quite nice as well, it was a good sunny day for the most part. June 18 Lost Hounds Horse TrialVery large turnout for this horse trial which was really nice to see. Over 160 entries total. But both Saturday and Sunday felt like the August trial instead of the June one. Hot and rather humid. Saturday had a nice breeze at least, Sunday not so much perhaps and it was more humid than Saturday. But got some really nice pictures I think. Didn't stay for much of the stadium jumping though because it was so hot and i was tired from running around a field all morning setting up my camera at different fences. Still trying to get the hang of some of the features on it though. For some reason some of the photos came out slightly burred, even though the background actually wasn't blurred, just the horse and rider were. Lot of the images came out great though and i'm quite pleased with them for the most part. Tried to keep more accurate track of horses and riders, but due to a small error somewhere I got a bit confused in the middle of my photo taking and so some of the images i'm not totally sure of rider or horse names. But those I am sure of I'll be updating with names as soon as I cross reference them with the program I have. Next weekend is Grand River Hunt mini trial. I'm debating going but may hold off and just wait for the full horse trial at South Farm in 2 weeks time. May 28 South Farm Schooling showHad to get up before 7am this morning to get out to the farm. Day was beautiful but a bit overly warm Spent most of the day scribing for one of the dressage judges and had someone else shooting a few photos for me while I was doing that. After noon I got to go spend a little while shooting pictures myself, so the ones posted in the slide show for May 28th are a mixture. Mine are more zoomed in than the others. Had camera on right settings this time so the photos came out with more clarity than last time. Also had a tripod which helped stabilize the camera as well. Quality on these photos is vastly improved from the Winona ones as a result of this. |
